Dates: The bird programs run on Thursday, June 29th, and Wednesday, July 19th, 2023 from 7:00 PM-8:30 PM. We encourage you to join us in both sessions but it is not required. The programs are scheduled to take place both in-person at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and virtually via the Regina Public Library Zoom platform.

June 29th, Discover Grassland Birds by Ear: Native grasslands are one of the planet's most endangered ecosystems. Saskatchewan is lucky enough to have some of the few remaining large patches of native grassland in the world. We’ll take you on a tour of some of the sounds of these grassland areas and some of the birds you will find in various crop fields around Regina. The birds in these grassland and cropland areas are very secretive and in most cases, you will hear rather than see them! This short course will give you some tools to identify some of the more common birds in these areas by sound.

July, 19th, Discover Wetland and Shrubland Birds by Ear: Ever stop near a wetland in southern Saskatchewan and hear so many birds you can’t keep them straight!? Wetlands are some of the most biodiverse areas on the prairies with lots of birds that call these areas home. In this class, we’ll give you some tips and tricks for identifying wetland birds by the sounds they make.

RPL has partnered with Birds Canada to bring you birding backpacks! Bird watching is a fun, year-round pastime you can do alone or with family and friends. Regina offers significant natural habitats; start exploring today with one of our birding backpacks. To learn more and borrow a birding backpack click here

Presenter Information: Dr. Ryan Fisher is the Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and an avid bird lover! He’s had over 20 years of experience researching birds in Western Canada. And when not doing research, you’ll probably find him out with his trusty pair of binoculars scouring the landscape for birds! For more information, please visit the Royal Saskatchewan Museum website.
