Join us for an hour-long exploration of the history of queer people in Saskatchewan and Western Canada. In this program, Dr. Valerie Korinek will delve into the hidden histories of the 2SLGBTQ community, including the challenges faced, and the contributions made to society and Pride. Dr. Korinek will reflect on how she came to write Prairie Fairies, A History of Queer Communities and People in Western Canada, 1930-1985 and the value of including minority communities in Western Canadian history.

Presenter Information:
Valerie Korinek is a Professor of Canadian cultural and gender history at the University of Saskatchewan where she holds the A.S. Morton Chair in History. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an award-winning teacher and writer as well as the author of four books and anthologies, including Roughing It in the Suburbs: Reading Chatelaine Magazine in the Fifties and Sixties, and Edible Histories, Cultural Politics: Towards a Canadian Food History. Her most recent book, Prairie Fairies: A History of Queer Communities and People in Western Canada, 1930-1985 was published by University of Toronto Press in 2018. Prairie Fairies has won a Saskatchewan Book Award, a CHA Clio Prize for Western Canadian History, and was recognized as the Best Book in Canadian Gender and Sexualities History in 2020.
