Canadian Food History: Ethiopian Famine, April 5, 2023
Canadian Food History: Calling All Women, May 24, 2023

In this program, we will explore the reaction of the Canadian media to the Ethiopian Famine of 1984, and how this influenced federal approaches to the crisis. Information, particularly first-hand reports emanating from famine-stricken territories in Ethiopia, fueled the Canadian media’s call for the government to help. Somewhat paradoxically, a shift in the media’s agenda produced a loss of interest in the famine several months later.

Presenter Information:  Jonathon Zimmer is a graduate student at the University of Regina, working on his one-year Master of Arts in History. He started taking history courses at Northern Lights College in 2014, at the age of 14, and he completed his Bachelor of Arts at Thompson Rivers University in 2022. Jonathon is also a member of the Canadian Network on Humanitarian History. His fields of interest involve a broad range of topics pertaining to the history of Canadian reaction to humanitarian crises.
