Alex Hutchinson will share insights from his 2025 book The Explorer’s Gene. Hear how exploration in any form—from trying a new food to running a marathon—is an essential ingredient of human life.

Join us for this year’s Queen City Marathon author talk, which delves into the hidden motivations that tempt us to try new things and take on difficult challenges. Recent findings in anthropology, biology, and neuroscience suggest that we’re wired to venture off the beaten path, whether literal or metaphorical, in pursuit of opportunities to learn about our own limits and about the world around us. This “explorer’s gene” spurs us to explore both the physical world and the world of ideas—and sends us out running.

A book signing will follow the talk.

Presented in partnership with Run Regina | GMS Queen City Marathon, and Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.

Alex Hutchinson is the New York Times bestselling author of The Explorer's Gene: Why We Seek Big Challenges, New Flavors, and the Blank Spots on the Map. He is a National Magazine Award-winning science journalist with The Globe and Mail and Canadian Running, and writes Outside magazine’s Sweat Science column. Before journalism, he was a postdoctoral physicist and a long-distance runner for the Canadian national team. He lives in Toronto.
