This program aims to unite beaders from everywhere. It’s a safe and open space for sharing culture, ideas, and art. Join artist Dani LaValley and learn how to write with beads to represent a name, community, or identity.
This beadwork activity will be best suited for Intermediate beaders - all experience levels welcome!
Recommended Materials: Black beads, white beads, beige/brown beads, assorted coloured beads (red/yellow/green/blue/pink), Pellon or stiff felt (fabric stabilizer/beading material, 4x5 inches), needle, thread, Large safety pin, leather backing (4x5 inches)
If you already have the recommended materials, great! If you need the materials, please contact spitman@reginalibrary.ca by Thursday April 3rd to pick up a free materials kit. Materials kits are only available for residents based in Regina SK, on a first come first serve basis. Limited quantities.
Dani LaValley is a two-spirit Michif/Cree/settler artist and educator from Treaty 6 territory. LaValley’s family comes from Crooked Lake, Cowessess First Nation, Prince Albert, and Regina. They have been a self taught beadwork artist since 2016, and have used the artist name Deadly.Beads since 2021 to share their beading journey online. LaValley’s art is influenced by their cultures and relationship with the land. They share their beading skills and knowledge with youth and adults in their community through beading classes, clubs, and circles. LaValley attends local markets and events to trade and sell their creations. Dani currently lives, teaches, and creates on Treaty 4 territory in oskana kâ-asastêki.
