Learn how Dark Souls has become one of the most successful game series of all time despite its difficulty

Shaye Ruecker breaks down how Dark Souls thrived as one of the most successful game series of all time despite the crushing difficulty and esoteric lore, while showcasing gameplay of some of the most iconic and difficult bosses in the series.

The "Souls" series of games are infamous for being extremely difficult and punishing. The game design, story and mechanics are esoteric and strange. So why has it become one of the most popular game series of all time? Shaye Ruecker breaks down what makes the series special, the intricate and unique approach to story, game design and the rocky birth of the series and the overwhelming success of the franchise. There will also be live gameplay of the most difficult and iconic bosses in the series.

Shaye Ruecker is a video game collector and historian from Regina. With the growth and prevalence of digital only media, Shaye has spent the last decade cataloguing, collecting and preserving video games so that media isn't lost to time, and sharing exceptional gaming experiences with audiences large and small.

About the branch

The RPL Film Theatre screens the best of world cinema – up to 15 films a month. The Film Theatre has “something for everyone” and is the only cinema in the city to consistently present critically-acclaimed contemporary and alternative cinema: Canadian, foreign and independent films and documentaries.

For more than 50 years, Regina Public Library (RPL) has played a pivotal role in the cultural life of the city of Regina and surrounding areas. In the mid-60s, interest in a permanent venue for film enthusiasts grew into a program at the Library – a co-operative effort between the local Film Council and the National Film Board of Canada. A landmark year for the cultural, multi-cultural and surrounding business communities was 1975, the year the RPL Film Theatre was officially launched.

Follow the RPL Film Theatre on Facebook at RPL Film Theatre for all the greatest updates on movies.
