A Chinese family discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live and decide to keep her in the dark, scheduling a wedding to gather before she dies.
Introduction by Sonia Stanger: When I think about it, my film fandom is really rooted in my love of a great story. Lulu Wang’s The Farewell is a perfect example of why. This autobiographical work follows Wang’s experience finding out her beloved Nai Nai, her grandmother back in China, is dying of cancer and the family has decided to keep her diagnosis a secret from her, as is customary there. This film is deeply personal and specific, but rather than being inaccessible, its intimacy makes it relatable in a way it couldn’t be if the scope was wider. Wang fought hard to retain the creative control to tell this story the way she wanted to, and it shows. The movie could easily have skewed towards broad stereotypical comedy or saccharine, over-the-top drama. What we get instead is a striking but subtle exploration of family, identity, culture, and loss that deftly weaves between humour and grief in a way that invites the audience to embrace the complexity of the big ideas it brings up. For more than 50 years, Regina Public Library (RPL) has played a pivotal role in the cultural life of the city of Regina and surrounding areas. In the mid-60s, interest in a permanent venue for film enthusiasts grew into a program at the Library – a co-operative effort between the local Film Council and the National Film Board of Canada. A landmark year for the cultural, multi-cultural and surrounding business communities was 1975, the year the RPL Film Theatre was officially launched.
