Ages 6 to 12. Learn about invisible ink, secret codes and other essential spycraft skills.

You'll need the following supplies:

Secret Codes Materials

  • Paper
  • A pencil and eraser
     

Invisible Ink Materials

You can choose one of these options. It is not necessary to have the materials for every ink. Pick the option with the supplies you have easily available at home.

An easy to clean work surface is recommended for to create all of the inks.

Ink #1

Heat Activated

  • Lemon Juice or another light coloured fruit juice, OR vinegar, OR baking soda OR milk (at least 2%)
  • A safe heat source such as a blow dryer or warm lightbulb
  • White paper
  • A cotton swab, paintbrush, or toothpick to use as a writing tool (or just use your finger)

Ink #2

Baking Soda and a Colourful Acid

  • An easily cleanable work surface, and/or a piece of cardboard to place under the paper
  • Equal parts baking soda and water (just a few tablespoons of each)
  • A few tablespoons colourful fruit juice (e.g. dark grape juice)
  • White paper
  • A cotton swab, paintbrush, or toothpick to use as a writing tool (or just use your finger)

Ink #3

Wax Reveal

  • An easily cleanable work surface, and/or a piece of cardboard to place under the paper
  • A white or clear wax crayon
  • Water with a few squirts of washable paint, OR water with a drop of food colouring (Warning: food colouring stains)
  • White paper
  • A large paintbrush, or a sponge or rag to spread the paint 

This program is conducted through Zoom. One hour prior to the program, we will send you an email with the Zoom meeting ID. Please ensure that you have Zoom installed on your device or computer.
