Films are created every day. A person writes it, a person directs it, it is given a budget. However, sometimes not many people go to see the film. The budget is never recouped, critics say mean things about the film and the poor wretch is thrown into the dustbin of history. It is a tale as old as time. Sometimes, however, a hand reaches back into that dustbin. Someone who is willing to stand up, look a debacle dead in the eye and say “You have value.” Sean Dunham, Sonia Stanger and Geremy Lague are three such stalwart citizens who are up to this task. Each month the 'Fellowship of the Flop' will introduce a card-carrying box-office bomb that was considered highly unsuccessful or unprofitable during its theatrical run. We will attempt to make the case that this cinematic stinker does not deserve its miscreant reputation and we will not apologize for it. Each presentation will feature a heartfelt declaration of love, dramatic readings of reviews, discussion and other hijinks. Join us before the film as we lay out our “Sorry, Not Sorry” defense of three classic flops.

This month:

Clue is a 1985 black comedy-mystery film based on the board game Clue. Siskel and Ebert gave it 2.5 and 2 out of 4 stars, respectively, calling it a “treadmill to nowhere” with a “screenplay [that] is so very, very thin.” It has a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 out of 100 on Metacritic. It had a $15 million budget and grossed $14.6 million. Clue swung for the fences with a stellar ensemble cast, madcap energy and a bizarre marketing gamble where they made three possible endings with different theatres receiving one of the three. BUT is it enough to drag Clue firmly out of flop territory?
