An aspiring DJ, from the South Bronx, and his best friend, a promoter, try to get into show business by exposing people to hip-hop music and culture.
Introduction by Eddy Alvaro:
The film I chose to spotlight is Beat Street, which was released in 1984. It features a young Hip-Hop DJ and EMCEE by the name of Kenny, aka “Double K”, alongside his group of friends Ramon, Chollie, and Kenny’s little brother, Lee. The group ventures out into the streets of Bronx, New York, in hopes of making it big as Hip Hop culture starts to rise. Each member of the group represents the core foundations of Hip Hop; Kenny with DJ’in and Emcee’in, Chollie who is also a DJ but helps Kenny get the gigs, Ramon with Graffiti’in, and Lee with Break’in. The film also features important members of the Hip Hop community which also help popularize the spread of the culture. Some of the artists featured are DJ Cool Herc, Grand Master Melle Mel and the Furious Five, Afrika Bambaataa, Sha-Rock, The New York City Breakers, The Rocksteady Crew, and many more. This film has played an important role in my love for Hip Hop culture and was a big inspiration for me getting into street dancing and I hope it continues to inspire more dancers to come.
Eddy's Biography:
My name is Eddy Alvaro and I’m a graphic designer and dancer/choreographer. Dancing almost my whole life, I am a self-taught hip-hop/street dancer with a huge love for all forms of dance. In my high-school career, I, along with some friends, started a bboy/breakdance crew having travelled and performed at cheerleading competitions, basketball half-time shows, grand openings, and other special events. As I got older, I became a dance instructor at a few studios in and around Regina for a handful of years. I continue to share my love of dance in the community with the VibesYQR Dance Workshops and am always looking for opportunities to help grow this community even more.
