Quick & Dirty Artist Talks - Environment

Quick & Dirty is a series of short talks by artists. Talented creators with practices that involve environmental elements will talk about their inspirations and creative processes.

Presenting Artists: Jessica Jang, Kevin Murphy, Tyler Los-Jones, Alex Tedlie-Stursberg.

Jessica Jang is an artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, and sculpture. She received a BFA from Emily Carr University, attended Chelsea College of Art in London, UK, holds a BEd from the University of British Columbia, and an MFA from the University of Guelph. Jang has exhibited work and developed arts-based education projects across Canada, England, and in Bogotá, Colombia. She recently participated in the 2021 &NOW Production Residency & Scholarship at the Factory Media Centre in Hamilton, Ontario with artist Ron Siu, where they explored the intersections of painting and digital animation. She is currently based in Tkaronto.

Kevin Michael Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist who often works with places and organisms, tracing the intersections of natural and social systems. Past projects have incorporated land deeds, honeybees, and microalgae. Kevin holds a BFA from UBC Vancouver and an MFA from the University of Guelph. He lives on the West Coast, on ancestral and unneeded Coast Salish territory. He has exhibited at sites throughout Canada and has recently been learning to grow mosses for a project at MoCA, Belgrade.

Tyler Los-Jones produces objects and images from his home in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Los-Jones’ has had recent solo exhibitions at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, Charlottetown; Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, and Division Gallery, Toronto. His work is included in numerous permanent collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts; the Government of Canada Department of Foreign Affairs; and Banff Centre. Los-Jones is currently developing a new exhibition titledThe Knots of the Net, which will open at Norberg Hall in Calgary in September.

Alex Tedlie-Stursberg is a multidisciplinary artist and educator working across various mediums with a key focus on sculpture and installation. His work has been exhibited in galleries across North America and Europe; recent exhibitions include, Mass Residue, with Field Contemporary, Vancouver, BC, (2019) and Sous la plage, les pavés, with Trapp Projects, Vancouver, BC (2020). This year he was awarded a Digital Originals grant by the Canada Council for the Arts and presented Atmospheric Supply; an online exhibition of activated sculptures (2020). In the past Stursberg has been employed as a Sessional Instructor with SFU Contemporary Arts and Langara College.
