Ages 6 to 12. Test your engineering skills by creating your own boat design out of cardboard. Experiment to determine much weight it can hold without sinking.

Supplies needed: 

  • A medium to large piece of cardboard. Use a cardboard box that is cut apart and flattened.
  • Scissors  
  • Ruler 
  • Masking tape, duct tape, packing tape or other waterproof tape. A low-heat glue gun could be used but ONLY WITH ADULT SUPERVISION.
  • Wax paper or foil (recommended for waterproofing) 
  • Something you can float your boat on such as a large popcorn or mixing bowl, storage tub, kitchen sink or bathtub full of water. Be sure to place it a few feet away from your device.
  • Towel to dry your hands
  • Waterproof items to use as weights for testing your boat. Some suggestions include:
    • Coins in a Ziplock bag
    • Waterproof toys with a stable base such as small toy cars
    • Non-breakable cups of a similar size
    • Kitchen weights 

Optional Supplies: 

  • Rubber bands if you would like to try making a motor 
  • Kitchen scale for weighing whatever you use as weights
  • Decorating supplies (e.g., markers, stickers, construction paper) 

This program is conducted through Zoom. One hour prior to the program, we will send you an email with the Zoom meeting ID. Please ensure that you have Zoom installed on your device or computer.
