Guest Curator Marina Fathalla from MICE Magazine chats with artists Soukayna and Timaj Garad about the personal and reciprocal impact of storytelling, poetry, and autobiography in their practices.

Marina Fathalla is a multidisciplinary artist and writer based in Tkaronto and Mississauga. Her research projects are fueled by a particular sensitivity to site, at the intersection of its poetics and its politics. Sometimes motivated by her position within the Egyptian diaspora in Canada, her research looks to history of land through, and in the margins of the heritage site.

Soukayna is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and writer with a background in film, art history, and French literature. Soukayna’s work is largely motivated by the dichotomies of their identity as a queer Muslim Moroccan and aims to center marginalized voices and erased histories in their writing and artistic practice. In 2018, Soukayna published WORDS, a book of poetry based on their personal experience with home, longing, abuse, mental health and healing. In addition to writing, Soukayna has given talks and lectures on alternative approaches to the art history canon with a specific interest for the African continent, and has participated in multiples panels discussing identity and care work in the art world and beyond. They also act, model, direct, and enjoy researching topics related to history, visual studies, and psychology.

Timaj Garad is an Ethiopian-Harari Toronto-based multi-disciplinary storyteller, Arts Educator, and Community Organizer using poetry, theatre, and music to bring her stories to life. Her art is autobiographical, working at the intersections of a black Muslim woman challenging injustice, unearthing truths, and healing. As an award-winning Artist & Educator, Timaj has graced over 300 stages and facilitated several arts-based workshops. Timaj is the Founder of LUMINOUS Fest - Canada’s first Black Muslim arts festival, and Co-founder of The Sisters’ Retreat - a retreat series hosting local and international arts-based wellness retreats for Muslim Women. She is currently living in Toronto, sharing her poetry on stages across the province, continuing to organize arts events, and working on her debut EP ‘Blooming at the Mouth’ to be released in early 2021. Timaj believes in the transformative power of the arts to build capacity and strengthen communities.
